Football is an area of society where homophobia remains a problem, both at grass-roots and professional levels. Nottingham Ball Bois, along with other gay community teams and the Gay Football Supporters’ Network, are involved in an initiative with the Football Association to combat homophobia in the professional game.

Close up of referee showing red cardAt a local level, we have had considerable interest from Nottingham Forest FC, who have included an item in their matchday programme which highlights the new ground regulations which outlaw homophobic chanting and abuse. They also gave a message of support to the club which we printed in a recent brochure.

The club also engages in awareness-raising activities with local community groups, appearing on local radio and also on a TV documentary to commemorate the death of former Forest player Justin Fashanu, the only ever openly gay professional football player. Find out more about our community work here.

If you would like to know more about our anti-homophobia activities, or if you would like the Nottingham Ball Bois to come and talk to your group or organisation, then please get in contact with us.
