Nottingham end debut season in top half of the table
Added May 4th, 2008

Nottingham Ball Bois finished their debut season in the GFSN League with a top-half finish - but only by the slenderest of margins from Midlands rivals Birmingham Blaze.

Final defeats for both teams left them tied on 13 points each, and also even on goal difference. Fifth and sixth places in the league had to be decided by goals scored, with Nottingham's three extra goals squeezing them into the final top-half berth.

Ballbois to appear on the BBC
Added April 19, 2008

Nottingham Ball Bois FC will appear in a television report on homophobia in football on Friday April 25th. The report examines homophobia in football ten years since the suicide of Justin Fashanu. Fashanu was the first, and remains the only professional footballer to have been openly gay, and was also a player for Nottingham Forest.

For the report, the recent Ballbois game against London Leftfooters was filmed, and players and club committee members were interviewed. The report will be shown on Friday 25th April at 7.30pm on BBC1 as part of the Inside Out documentary series. The programme will only be shown in the East Midlands region, however viewers with Sky can watch anywhere in the country on Channel 980. The programme will also be available to view online for one week after transmission from the Inside Out website where it can also be downloaded to the BBC i-player.

Forest support anti-homophobia campaign
Added April 10, 2008

Nottingham Forest has shown its support for the GFSN anti-homophobia campaign, in which members of Nottingham Ball Bois FC are involved. Our club Secretary has been liaising with Forest, and on March 24, in the programme for their home game against Brighton and Hove Albion, a page was dedicated to homophobia in football. Outlining new regulations which outlaw homophobic abuse in football grounds, the club's safety officer outlined Forest's support for the initiative and the practical steps that they are now taking, stating that: "We look forward to working with the GFSN and other organisations in the future and any incidents of homophobia at The City Ground will be dealt with in the same positive way we deal with racism."

Nottingham Ball Bois welcome this positive and encouraging action from Nottingham Forest as an important part of what will be an ongoing campaign. For more information about the campaign, see the dedicated section on our website.

Nottingham joins FA anti-homophobia initiative
Added August 16 2007

Six Ballbois members joined representatives of other gay football clubs at an FA-backed summit on challenging homophobia in the professional game, held on August 14th at Charlton Athletic's Valley stadium. The initiative was started by the Gay Football Supporters' Network, and this session reflected on recent changes to FA regulations which make homophobic abuse a punishable offence both on and off the field.

Brendan Batson of the Professional Footballers' Association, and one of West Bromwich Albion's ground-breaking trio of black players in the late 1970s, compared the challenges of fighting homophobia with his earlier experiences of racism as a player. With both being difficult journeys to undertake, he urged "Don't be afraid." Other speakers represented the Metropolitan Police, the FA, the Football Supporters' Federation and the GFSN.

The initiative now moves to a phase where volunteers from the gay footballing world, including the Ballbois, will liaise with professional clubs to advise on the implementation of the new regulations.

Gay football play premieres in Nottingham
Added August 22 2007

Former Ballboi Stuart Hosker returned to Nottingham for the first performance of his self-penned play 'Two Gay Men and a Dalek.' The story takes place against the backdrop of a game featuring the fictional (yet strangely familiar!) gay football team, the Nottingham Outlawz. A father and son find themselves facing up to some issues on the touchline in a performance that combines both humorous and deeply moving moments.

The one-off performance was presented as a work-in-progress at the Momentum festival for new writing at the Lakeside Arts Centre in Nottingham. A number of current Ballbois were in the audience, and we wish Stuart many further successes with the play.
